About Artist:
Darwin was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He worked for many years as an advertising illustrator with the Quebec Chronicle, Medicine Hats News and the Vancouver Province newspapers. He learned cartooning for the Hanna-Barbera cartoonist Lou Saw and worked as the NHL's Vancouver Canucks' cartoonist in the early days. Without knowing it you've seen his logos and ads for years. Recently, Darwin has been studying art with artist Joseph Wong at Kwantlen College University, He collects and restores old cars.
Statement:
We call Darwin the "painter of lonlieness" because of his extraordinary imagery of the barren and vanishing landscape of the Canadian Prairie. As you can see he is a highly skilled detail artist. He has taken this skill and his passion for old things and opened spaces to present a deep sense of solitude. His art actually does what it's supposed to do -provoke emotions. He creates a mood for reflection and reminds us of a different time. Darwin's lonley work will always be with us but he's experimenting with other styles and colour, as seen in his "Neighbourhood" series. He is at the beginning of his artistic journey and it is going to be very enjoyabe watching his imagery evolve in the years to come.
